I learned to use this block well from my teacher. She insisted that each student secure two blocks to make yoga postures more accessible for those students who lacked the flexibility of a contortionist, a label that excludes most everyone. Using this block was especially helpful in attaining strength and ease in the postures, Ardha Chandrasana or Half-Moon and Trikonasana, Triangle. As a result of the calm developed in these poses when I trained with my Hugger Mugger block, my alignment is most superior for a non-contortionist. In addition, I immediately realized the benefit from simply sitting on the block; my sad posture was instantly corrected. Speaking of sitting, I place this block beneath my folded hip and rear in Pigeon’s pose or Runner’s Stretch. I enjoy the stretch of my piriformis muscles that this posture provides, and this block allows me safety in the pose and a much needed elongation of my vertebre. Similarly, using this block in Uttanasana, Standing Forward Bend, provides a powerful visual and safety factor. There are three sides of the block to support the hands in this folded posture that lead the stiff hamstrings to stretch safely. Also, the three-inch size is perfect for both men and women, and the texture allows for stability under the yogi’s weight. Finally, the fingers, the posterior, and the forehead all rest confortably (individually of course) on the block’s foam material, that cannot be said of hard, wooden blocks. Enjoy! Namaste.
